I started practicing in 2001, an opinionated snob towards any form of slow exercise, in the days of a stressful multi-national IT consulting career. Sweaty hard tennis, smoking & drinking were my outlets. My self-awareness was at its infant stage.
It was pregnancy with my 2nd son that offered me the opportunity to try yoga and cliché as it sounds, my yoga teacher opened up a new world for me, one where I felt totally 'at home' with myself. Over the years I'd get tiny light bulb moments that shed light on my body awareness & my crazy busy mind, the concept of Self, why the world is how it is, and a million other things. Practicing yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation and yoga philosophy have become my tools for dealing with the ups and downs and finding a sense of peace.
Being not very bendy, I never imagined I would ever be a yoga teacher! Years later, my awesome teacher trainer, Mimi Kuo Deemer, said that one of the best teachers they'd had through the 20 Triyoga Teacher training programs was the least flexible. Turns out that my not having a ballet dancer's body could be a strength after all, understanding modifications and common struggles of different bodies.
I love science, so I always try to research evidence behind something if I don't quite understand why it works. Equally it would be very limiting, in a rich ancient yoga tradition, to expect that if our science hasn't got round to proving something it doesn't apply. What better example than quantum mechanics to show that all this 'hippy' talk of energy and vibrations is not just hocus pocus and that what we think we know to be true is beyond our understanding.
Every class tends to have a philosophical theme eg. Impermanence, running alongside the physical eg. hip openers, and I always encourage my students to allow their personal experience, rather than dogmatic teaching, to drive their beliefs and actions. To notice, what does and doesn't work for their health and wellbeing .
Now I share my time between working for a charity 4 days a week, and yoga teaching. I'm passionate about sharing the incredible wisdom of yoga, especially with youth.
